"We want to see Jesus lifted high". So sang over 170 children in a capacity Christ Church Radlett on the two-day Easter Eggstravaganza, Going Bananas. It could have been the motto - it certainly was the prayer - of the 70 organisers and helpers who made the event possible. The children came from all the churches in Radlett and many from the surrounding area. The majority, however, have no regular connection with any church.

The aim of the event, on 11th and 12th April, was to teach about two men of the Bible who went bananas for God: Elijah and Gideon. Elijah, who poured water on his altar before calling down fire from heaven to prove that the God of Israel was the one true God and Gideon, who won a battle after sending most of his troops home to prove that victory comes from relying on God, rather than our own resources.

These messages were conveyed to the children using a creative blend of activities, discussions and games - all tailor-made to for the various age groups ranging from 4 to 14 years old. On Wednesday all the groups made altars like Elijah; the youngest from card and acetate and the middle group from play-doh on tile bases, whilst the older ones even had to go and find materials to make fire from the surrounding area. (None were successful - so they resorted to a bar-b-que! On Thursday, they made horns and lanterns like those in Gideon's army.

The creative sessions were complemented by games and discussion groups, in which the meaning of the story and its relevance for the children's lives today were explored. On Thursday the top group went on a Treasure Hunt, and the younger ones did a puzzle, to help them piece together the key elements of the story. You can see pictures of all these activities on the picture pages - click on the menu bar below.

Each day started and ended with united times of worship in which the much-loved singing was combined with some very entertaining dramas in which the story of the day was conveyed. As usual this was a time for learning new songs: "God's people" and "Be bold" were added to the repertoire this year. It was also an opportunity for some popular Easter Eggstravaganza favourites: "God's not dead" and "Roll the stone away" both telling of the wondrous Easter message.

Elijah prayed, "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God". And that is our prayer for all the 200 children who attended over the two days. Anyone visiting the site over those two days could not fail to sense the excitement and enjoyment that all involved radiated. We pray that the new insights learnt over these two days may stay with them for many years to come.
